Our Tomato Season Story

Our Tomato Season Story

August at Sanders Funny Farm means one thing above all else: tomatoes. Rows of them. More than you can count, and honestly, more than you can eat fresh which is exactly why we've been spending long days in the kitchen turning them into something that lasts.

The Cherry Tomato Chronicles

This year's cherry tomato crop has been something special. We planted a mix of Sun Gold, Black Cherry, and Juliet varieties, and the warm summer gave us a harvest that's been almost overwhelming in the best way. Sweet, thin-skinned, and bursting with flavor — these little guys are the kind of tomato that makes you remember why you started farming in the first place.

We've been selling them fresh at the farmers market, but we've also been slow-roasting batches with olive oil, garlic, and a pinch of sea salt. The result is a concentrated, jammy tomato that goes on everything — pasta, toast, grilled meats, you name it.

Sauce Season Is Here

Alongside the cherry tomatoes, our Roma and San Marzano plants have been producing steadily, and we've been putting them to work. We're making our classic farm tomato sauce in small batches — nothing fancy, just tomatoes, onion, garlic, fresh basil, and time. Low and slow is the only way.

Each batch gets tasted, adjusted, and tasted again. It's one of those kitchen rituals that feels less like work and more like a reminder of why we do this.

What's Coming to the Market

In the coming weeks, look for fresh cherry tomatoes and heirloom slicers at our farmers market stand for those who'd like a hand at making their own sauce at home. We're also exploring a small run of whole jarred sun-dried tomatoes too!

Tomato season is short. Come find us while it lasts.
